The University's Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) has been developed in
accordance with the OSHA Respirator Standard 29 CFR 1910.134. The program
addresses the control of employee exposures to airborne contaminants. The
perferred methods of limiting exposures to airborne contaminants are the use of
engineering controls, increased ventilation and/or product substitution using
less hazardous chemicals. It is strongly encouraged that these methods be
evaluated prior to the use of a respirator. When these methods are not
available or practical, respiratory protection must be used. Any work place
where respiratory protection is in use or storage, must operate in compliance
with the University's Respiratory Protection Program. A copy of the RPP Manual
can be obtained from EHO.
Area Supervisors are responsible for identification of potential airborne
contamination areas or operations. If a potential exists, the supervisor must
then contact EHO for evaluation and respiratory protection selection.
Individual departments are responsible for implementation of RPP requirements.
This implementation may include medical evaluations, fit testing, and the
purchase and maintenance of appropriate equipment.
The University Chemical
Hygiene Plan for Laboratories also includes a section on Respiratory
Protection requirements and may be consulted for additional information. EHO
should be contacted for further information on the Respiratory Protection
Program.
