Laser Safety Program
All activities involving lasers and laser systems at SU must be conducted in compliance with NYS DOL Laser regulations and in a manner that protects University personnel, students, visitors, and property from harmful exposure to laser radiation. EHO maintains an inventory of all Class 3b and 4 lasers owned, maintained or operated by SU personnel on University owned or operated property (excluding Optical fiber communication systems). EHO must be notified of the intent to purchase, dispose, modify or relocate any laser on campus. Affected departments and/or principal investigators must ensure that operators of class 3b and 4 lasers received and document instruction on the hazards associated with the laser(s), procedures to minimize exposure and applicable rules and regulations.
Radio-Frequency Sources (3 KHz - 300 GHz)
EHO maintains a database of non-ionizing, radio-frequency (3KHz - 300 GHz) emission point sources on University owned or operated properties. It is the responsibility of University departments to notify EHO of any procurement, removal or modification of an applicable source (i.e. transmitter) or the modification of a source's operating parameters (power, frequency, ect.). Exposures from applicable RF sources must be maintained within exceptable exposure levels in accordance with ANSI's safety standards for RF electromagnetic fields (IEEE C95.1) and operated in a manner that protects University personnel, students and visitors from RF exposures.
