Hazardous Waste Management Program

Program Description

In compliance with federal (US EPA), state (NYS DEC) and local hazardous waste disposal regulations, SU requires that arrangements for disposal of hazardous materials be coordinated by EHO. The written program provides guidance for those responsible for hazardous waste management. Hazardous waste materials will be collected by EHO and transported to an appropriate disposal facility by a licensed firm. EHO is responsible for maintaining contracts with disposal firms and documentation of disposal activity. Laboratory supervisors and other supervisory personnel in areas which generate hazardous waste are responsible for:

  1. providing appropriate training, protective equipment and procedures to their personnel;
  2. management of hazardous waste generated in the area as outlined in the Chemical Hygiene Manual;
  3. providing for proper storage, labelling and pickup of waste materials;
  4. conducting regular inspections of the area to ensure proper hazardous waste management;
  5. being familiar with the current legal requirements on hazardous waste disposal as outlined in the Hazardous Waste Manual;
  6. operating in accordance with SU's Waste Minimization Guidelines; AND
  7. contacting the EHO if questions arise.

Waste Pick-up Procedure

All waste materials must be identified by the generator regarding composition and hazardous characteristics. This information must be provided to EHO staff prior to pick-up, both for safety and regulatory reasons. Pickup may be scheduled through a phone call to the EHO or by using the Pickup Request Form. Pickups will be scheduled and coordinated by the Hazardous Materials Technologist.
